What is FOMF?FOMF is an acronym that stands for Friends of Millard Fillmore. FOMF is a trivia hunt that is held yearly on the first weekend in February. Dr. Robert Hunter, a former Carlmont teacher, started it 39 years ago in hopes of teaching high school students how to properly research. Since then, it has grown to include high schools from the entire Bay Area. Last year alone, Carlmont had more than 300 students participate. It is a truly academic event, just look at this year's questions! Each group of students, once assigned a question must find the answer, and then bring in no less than two hard-copy proofs. Hard-copy means NO Internet proofs are ever accepted! All answers must be found in books, newspapers, magazines, ect. This isn't as easy as it sounds, though. Not only are these questions hard to find the answer to, but also the proofs that students submit MUST in one way or another restate the question in its entirety and give the answer. Students must then make copies of the required pages from the books and correctly cite them. This event is often harder than any homework assignment and truly does take ALL weekend. Despite this, it is one of the most memorable and anticipated events of the school year. |
